As the Magazine Publishers of America changes to a new tagline and logo “MPA – The Association of Magazine Media” I wanted to share the magazine media minute featuring cross media magazine branding on the iPad.

Digital Magazine Newsstand Specials

I like the digital magazine newsstand specials I receive from Zinio. In addition to a brilliant digital issue feature in their magazine newsstand app, I receive good value magazine subscription deals each week.

The iPad magazine newsstand app (see more magazine apps) provides an Explore and Featured tab to view the latest featured magazine covers and feature story spreads.

The iPad magazine app contains 29 featured issues which exposes iPad readers to plenty of new magazines each month in addition to the complete magazine newsstand shop tab and category options for viewing new titles.

Zinio is also looking forward to the interest of interactive magazines. Here’s a video with Zinio’s CEO speaking to their direction.

iPad Magazines in iBooks App Store

Since my original post and excitement about magazine design for tablets (iPad Magazines Post) I am now a proud owner of an iPad.

Once I unpacked the iPad I dove right into the iBooks app to look for my first ipad magazine.

Next I headed to the iBook store app which is not pre-loaded but is prompted as an app download once the ipad in sync’d for the first time.

After installing the iBook app I searched for magazines and also looked at the categories tab to learn that magazines don’t yet have a seat at the table for the ipad. I’ll post updates and look forward to seeing new magazine apps listed. It would be excellent to have an iPad magazines featured section in the store.

iPad Magazine App Development and Flash Questions

iPad magazine apps are now being accepted by Apple for the iPad magazine & bookstore. Music, apps, and now books and magazines will benefit from the Apple store periodical distribution model.

But the questions that relate to Apple’s blocking of flash on iPhone, iPod, and now the iPad continue to keep magazine app developers asking for some transparency into future Apple plans.

iPad Magazine Design

I’ve have learned over the past year that browsing with an iPhone is a unique experience. I do believe that the iPad tablet will make interacting with the web a completely fun and interactive experience.

The magazine iPad design landscape is wide open. The capabilities of reading a iPad magazine, downloaded from the iBook store “on demand newsstand” and having both stunning visuals and digital media capabilities inherent in the future of digital iPad magazines is excellent!
