As the Magazine Publishers of America changes to a new tagline and logo “MPA – The Association of Magazine Media” I wanted to share the magazine media minute featuring cross media magazine branding on the iPad.

While keeping a periodic digital paginated magazine structure you can begin to see the tremendous potential of tablet magazines. The periodic digital content is augmented with daily news.

PM iPad Tablet Magazine Introduction

Now matter how large or small, own your niche in every media channel. The beauty of the magazine brand is that people understand “magazine” media regardless of the channel. The magazine website will continue to the the heart of the brand and should be updated from a graphic design and user interactive experience perspective at least once a year. Next, determine how print, digital editions, tablet editions, podcasts, newsletters, video, events, webcasts, resource directories, and other content and advertising items should be prioritized based on your niche and target readership. The New Twitter and your Magazine

September 30th, 2010 | Posted in Blog, news | No Comments

The new twitter user interface looks very interesting and takes one step forward toward a more comprehensive user engagement experience. As Facebook and Twitter become our core pop culture social platforms for both business and leisure, every magazine publisher should be finding ways to utilize these social channels to engage current and new readers.

Magazines on iPhone 4

Well, lets just say I’m looking forward to the view.  The view of digital magazines on the iPhone 4 retina display.

The 960-by-640 backlit LCD display boasts a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, making it the highest-resolution phone screen ever. – Apple

My interest in looking back to mobile magazine presentation especially in light of the excitement around tablet editions is that the resolution of the iPhone 4 will again bring out the best in the magazine mobile presentation UX.  Improved resolution devices will continue to provide new design and layout capabilities based on magazine delivery medium.

Magazine iPad App or Scribd

Publishers do need options for ipad magazine editions.  Perhaps not just magazine apps but other options such as the HTML5 option from Scribd which we may see as another presentation option.

With publishers’ budgets and resources fairly limited, online document marketplace Scribd hopes that instead of devoting the time and fees to working with major content design firms, magazines will simply let it create an HTML5 app for them in a matter of minutes. The only price: Scribd wants a share of the ad revenues.

Apps should deliver brand extension value and not just the latest digital or tablet magazine edition.  What are your thoughts?

Have you updated your recommended Facebook settings lately.  Today, Facebook prompted the notice to learn more about their new simple privacy controls including the recommended setting.

Recommended Facebook Settings
We offer a group of recommended settings as a default. You can think of “Everyone,” “Friends of Friends” and “Friends Only” as big buckets containing different groups of information. With our recommended settings, your information is distributed across all three buckets. “Everyone” contains status updates and information that people may want to share with a larger audience. “Friends of Friends” includes photos and videos of you, which are often relevant to friends of your friends. “Friends Only” includes all of your contact information and things that are only relevant to people you interact with directly.

Adobe Digital Publishing Brings Interactivity

June 1st, 2010 | Posted in Blog, design | No Comments

After reading my WIRED Magazine iPad Edition, I am more excited for the potential to make the magazine brand stand out as the premium audience connection and interaction tool for all media and marketing purposes.

The current iPad magazine editions are probably overpriced and take no circulation strategy into consideration, but they do show the promise of high quality content and unlimited content portability.

I’m looking forward to having Adobe share some of the other tools involved in addition to CS5 for the making of this tablet edition.

Previous experiments to bring the magazine experience to the Web via a browser have resulted in a static experience. With new reading paradigms like the WIRED Reader, readers are able to experience the design fidelity of a print magazine married with the interactivity of digital.

Circ Audit for Magazine iPad Editions

In addition to the the news of the Wired iPad Magazine Edition we posted in terms of magazine app development, I wanted to point out the other dimension that larger magazine publishers will need to consider – Circ Audit.”  Chris Anderson’s post also included that the app had been approved by ABC.

The Audit Bureau of Circulations ABC has approved the app as a replica digital edition of the magazine. The Wired app is available now for $4.99 from the iPad App Store or at http://www.wired.com/app. This is the third ABC-approved digital edition from Condé Nast, following GQ and Vanity Fair, which are available for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

The magazine circulation audit capabilities will certainly bring new transparency to readership.  So be sure that you focus on real value to your audience niche and the the circ engagement reporting dimensions will take care of themselves.

I’ll be downloading my Wired iPad app edition today but also feel that there sould be some connection or incentive for existing magazine subscribers to get the iPad, iPhone, Andriod, or other tablet editions.  Although the iBookstore isn’t helping publishers identify readers, perhaps all users would initially pay the $4.99 rate but existing subscribers would receive each subsequent edition at a reduced rate or free (once registering their email within the app itself) as long as they keep their “print subscription” active.  I’m holding on to the print medium here because we don’t know the long term implications of moving an audience to digital channels, especially during the early adopter phase of the tablet edition technology.

Social Media for Magazines

A nice article and presentation link speaking to the importance of social media in the modern publishing business model.

What business are you in as a publisher? If you believe that your core business is publishing, then you are competing with the entire world we are all publishers today.

via Junta42 Content Marketing blog: The Social Media Publishing Model for Publishers.

I have gone as far as saying that the future circ model for publishers will be digital and will be comprised of various communities and social segments.

Own your niche and make it unique with print, web, and digital delivery and interaction formats for your audience.
